Chapter 13

Strayer chapter 13 starts off with how Europeans had an advantage in obtaining their power. Things such as location, their ability to conquer land and voyaging through sea and on foot were all things that allowed Europeans to have a hierarchy.

By Europeans understanding their location and its connection to agriculture, they tried to conquer as much land with agricultural advancement as they would. Once the America's were discovered around the 1607's, it was also seen that they were also highly valuable in that area. They also were able to excel in other areas such as trading. Most of these qualities reigned on the mindset of wanting to out power other empires and colonies. Strayer also talks about how the diseases and germs Europeans had gave them an advantage because they were the only people used to these germs. Thus, putting other races a disadvantage because their contact would allow them to get sick and pass.

Though there were many factors of what caused Native Americans to die in large numbers, diseases were a big part of their end. These deaths sometimes wiped out 90% of Native American populations. This was later on called the Great Dying.

The Great Dying was later linked to the Little Ice Age (where temperatures were very very low) because Native American's would burn trees and have other practices with nature that when they died off, it is a hypothesis that this change was a factor of why temperatures decreased drastically. The Little Ice Age had various changes for different regions on earth however almost everyone experienced a dramatic weather change.

Strayer also talks about the Incas and Aztecs and how they had solid agricultural benefits as well as having silver and gold mining advantages. They also mentioned the three legal systems they had which were named, encomienda, repartimiento and hacienda which all three gave power to those with land and had the "Spanish Crown". They also talk about how the Spanish were extremely violent even with their own people. Males had the most power over everyone else and women were not treated fairly.

The Colonies of Sugar talked about how big of an impact sugar had and how they had a high supply in demand and also plenty of people benefitted from its profits. Slavery played a big part in the production of sugar. They provided (well against their will) cheap labor and had to endure sure terrible working conditions. There were mainly male slaves which brought up a division between the sexes. Women were not treated fairly and when their children were taken away they were given no sympathy or compassion.

In the makings of the Russian Empire Strayer started off by saying how Russian domination was spreading by them taking over many Russian-speaking cities. As their populations grew they were able to set up a social ranking. The textbook shares how empire meant conquest which would result in resistance. However, we can still see how Russia is huge demographically so they did not have too much trouble handling the troubles they faced.

For Asian Empires, the Chinese pushed to central Asia and built many empires. One of them being the Ottoman empire.
